For any person who has been appointed as a guardian of a person, other than a parent who is a guardian of the property of a minor child, the law requires you to take an eight hour training course within 4 months of being appointed as guardian. The course will cover the legal duties and responsibilities of a guardian; the rights of the ward; the availability of local resources to aid the ward; and, the preparation of habilitation plans and annual guardianship reports including financial accountings for the ward's property.
Next class: Friday, February 17, 2012. Class begins at 8:00 am and ends at 5:00 pm. Pre-registration is required. This course has been approved by the Chief Judge of Volusia and Seminole. Classes are held at the Westchester Assisted Living Facility, 558 N. Semoran Boulevard, Winter Park, FL 32793.
Cost: $100 Deadline to Register is January 19, 2012.

Any person wishing to become a professional guardian and handle multiple guardianship cases must take a 40 Hour Professional Guardianship Training as required by the State of Florida. Other requirements are a criminal background check, a credit check, posting a $50,000 blanket bond and passing a competency exam. You may find more information on the requirements by going to the Department of Elder Affairs/Guardianship and/or viewing Chapter 744 of the Florida Statutes.

Class begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 5:30 p.m. There are no make up classes! You must be in attendance for all 40 hours of class. There will be a 1 hour lunch and two 15 minute breaks. This class fee is non-refundable. Please be sure to check your schedule prior to registering for this class.

For the Professional Guardian Training a DVD will be sent to you with the Florida Guardianship Professional Guardian Manual and the Appendix. It will be your responsibility to print the manual and appendix or simply bring a laptop to class but no internet will be allowed during class time.
Guardian Mentoring
After completion of the 40 Hour Guardianship Training you will be eligible to join the Guardian Mentoring Association (GMA). You must be a guardian in order to be eligible to join the association. Please see our website at www.guardianmentoringassociation.com. We are the first formal mentoring association for family and professional guardians in Florida.
