For any person who has been appointed as a guardian of a person, other than a parent who is a guardian of the property of a minor child, the law requires you to take an eight hour training course within 4 months of being appointed as guardian.  The course will cover the legal duties and responsibilities of a guardian; the rights of the ward; the availability of local resources to aid the ward; and, the preparation of habilitation plans and annual guardianship reports including financial accountings for the ward's property.

Any person wishing to become a professional guardian and handle multiple guardianship cases must take a 40 Hour Professional Guardianship Training as required by the State of Florida.  Other requirements are a criminal background check, a credit check, posting a $50,000 blanket bond and sitting for a competency exam.  You may find more information on the requirements by going to the Department of Elder Affairs/Guardianship and/or viewing Chapter 744 of the Florida Statutes.
